Christmas Cactus

I had never heard of a Christmas Cactus until we bought our house and it came with one. Most of the year this plant is well, kind of ugly. It just looks like a boring semi-green cactus. I almost threw it out the first year we had it. But then every year in December, right around Christmas no less - it gets beautiful flowers on it!

In training news I've been swimming IM at the pool. I am proud to announce I can now do 25m of butterfly without drowning! I have been told this will help my freestyle. If not, at least it is good for putting my heart rate through the roof and leaving me gasping for air while clinging to the gutter as my lane mates chat about what a beautiful day it is. All while breathing normally.

I used to have a Christmas cactus too! And I'll admit I thought it was boring too...until it got it's pretty flowers! :)

I'm so impressed you can do butterfly. One day I'd like to learn too. :)

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one attempting Fly this off-season. I so feel your pain!
I had to tell the lifeguard not to dive in and try to save me before starting my IM set yesterday.

Congrats on mastering the butterfly! It is a hard stroke to get down. That was 'mystroke' back in the competition days. My 100 fly was faster then my 100 free (and still is!)

The masters coaches of San Diego county must be in cahoots, our gave us butterfly too. I tried really hard to make myself look like a butterfly. I think I have a hard time because as butterflies don't swim. I must have been more inspired by the creatures of the sea as I demonstrated "wounded seal" perfectly.

Those cactus are so pretty when they bloom. Woohoo on the fly!

I just call mine the 'butterflop' as I just sorta flop around the pool and try not to laugh too hard and inhale lots of water. It's a spectacle.

So impressed by the butterfly! I "was" a butterflier and now I struggle doing a 25...whoever invented IM was smart putting bacskstroke second :)

Keep it up!

- The one thing I do not miss from the southwest are the cactus, they are the ugliest things.

- with all the years of swimming I have done, I never could do the butterfly, I have NEVER finished a race without being DQ'd when I had to swim the butterfly.

I found your blog via Meg's. I love Christmas Cactus! I couldn't even attempt the butterfly...I have barely mastered freestyle without gasping for breath, lol!

My grandmother always has a Christmas cactus. I don't know where she keeps that thing during the rest of the year.

When I lived in Las Vegas I had a real cactus in my yard. I decorated it every year and called it the Christmas Cactus. I did not know there was such a real thing. The flower is kind of pretty

Funny! Glad you survived!

We recently moved into a house with some leftover plants. They better start sprouting flowers like that soon or they're goners!
