Carlsbad 1/2 Marathon Race Report

Steven had a nice single speed for cruising around the course to take pictures this morning.

After a week of 5+ inches of rain, the weather was great for racing. I did not have a big race strategy, other than to go out strong, negative split and after mile 10 try to go harder. My goal was to go under 1:25 and try to make it into the top 5 women ($ goes 5 deep and I want a Garmin).

I don't look at pace or splits when I race, so my only indicator is heart rate. My heart rate monitor broke, so I got to just race off feel.

Between mile 1-4 I had a terrible side stitch. I didn't think I had gone out too hard and hadn't planned on any pain so early. Frustrating, but it probably helped me negative split. According to chip timing I did this by :10 per mile in the second half. This was fun.

My Mom and I at the finish.

1:25:01 was my final time - HAHA! Yeah, missed that sub-1:25 by a mere two seconds. 6th place female - missed that $ for the Garmin by :33. Hey - it's January, it will most definitely be a learning year right?! I'm happy with it. I've got a hillier and harder 1/2 marathon in 3 weeks where I can try again. And it was a :39 PR.

Race scenery.

Awesome, lady! I saw your results earlier today, but was still super foggy from last night so I wasn't sure if you'd be happy with it or not lol.
Good to start to the year!!

Well Charisa, the first time I came upon your blog ever, you reported a 1:27 half marathon, now I'm reading a 1:25, you're heading in the right direction. Now had there been a swim in there, I'm sure you'll would have nailed it.

I like it that your goals are pretty much spot on- realistic and achievable but obviously no cake walk... you were right there in almost achieving them today. Perfect to set goals like that! Congrats!!

So it stopped raining after I left?
Hmmm... guess I'm good luck.

Wow, you are FAST!!!! Great race, shame about not achieving the goab, but 2 seconds??? Seriously. I am sure the next one will be perfect.

I think without the side stitch (bummer!!!) you would have gotten that 5ht place and the sub 1:25. In 3 weeks that will be no problem! Congrats!

nice job, girl! Racing by feel (sans heart rate monitor) is the way I roll.

I would have to say that is nothing to sneeze at for January, running on feel and training as much as you have. Great job!

Congrats on the PR! Though I'm grumbling to myself that you were robbed of the $$ - you SO deserve that Garmin!!

Nice job! It'll all come as your fitness into the season builds. Racing RPE is a different experience than by HR, but it helps you get in tune with your body more. Good luck in 3 weeks!
